It All Began with a Mic, Bill Simmons & Google
If we're all honest with ourselves, we can admit to waking up somedays and feeling uninspired and bored. That was me in June 2017. I was in a rut and searching for something bigger. But what did I want to do and where was I going to start?
Want to know a secret? Two years ago I bought a microphone with the desire to start a podcast. I always wanted a show of my own. I listened to my first podcast 10 years ago. Bill Simmons, had a weekly show discussing sports and his takes on pop culture and reality TV. It was relaxed, funny and always a good time. Often I would kick around a concept with friends and then abandon the idea and label it as "silly." However, the mic sat on my desk that entire time, first staring back with judgment (my own) then ignoring me with total apathy. Finally, on a warm Sunday in June I googled, "how to start a podcast." Seriously, that's exactly what I typed and then I went to work. I recorded something "just to hear what I sound like," and surprisingly, the words flew out of me. Before I knew it, I had recorded over 20 minutes and YOU WANNA DO WHAT?! was born. From there, I created a logo, found free music to license, taught myself some quick editing functions and released the first episode of YOU WANNA DO WHAT?! 3 days later. (There were more steps than that, but you get the picture).
Since launching in Summer '17, YOU WANNA DO WHAT?! has listeners in over 35 countries and has grown 1400%! I'm proud that the audience is equal parts men and women, proving that everyone has a desire to try new things and we all can use a little nudge. Sandwiched in between growing the podcast is my paying job plus socializing in the world and sleep, but you know what? I absolutely love it! I wake up excited for what comes next and inspired to be of service.
